Using and Redistributing PIR Databases

Vendors and commercial entities who use and redistribute the PIR databases are requested to follow each of the following steps:

1. Inform PIR (pirmail@georgetown.edu)
2. Indicate to end users the name, the source, and the release number and date of the database.
3. Keep releases of PIR databases up-to-date, by using PIR regular quarterly releases.
4. Send PIR an annual statement with an estimated number of end users and any feedback information.

Linking to PIR

PIR provides extensive cross-references and links to a large number of molecular databases of protein sequences, families, enzymes and pathways, structures and structural classes, genes and genomes, literature, and taxonomy. We welcome and encourage you to provide reciprocal links back to PIR from your databases. Summarized below are instructions for linking to the most widely retrieved databases. For questions and comments, please contact us.

PIR Privacy Policy

PIR DOES NOT COLLECT OR ASSEMBLE PERSONAL INFORMATION FOR SALE OR DISTRIBUTION. PIR is asked to provide federal funding agencies with statistical information such as the total counts of different users, originating domains, files accessed, etc., for budget justification. The information obtained by PIR over the Internet depends on the type of interaction: Web site, FTP site, or email.

For each visit to the PIR Web site, the server automatically collects and stores the originating domain name, date, time, and files accessed. For user surveys and feedbacks, we request optional email addresses. For sequence submissions, we request mailing addresses and phone numbers in order to verify submission information before publication. For each visit to the PIR anonymous FTP site, the server logs the originating domain name and IP address, email address (if provided) and the files accessed. For each email, the mail server logs the complete email address. These addresses are used only for direct communication by PIR staff.
